Five Minds, Not Five Guys
Gardner’s Five Minds of The Future
Gardner parallels some themes with Pink. For example, Pink's chapter on Symphony echoes Gardner's chapter on The Synthesizing Mind. We desire to make sense of our world, draw meaning from it and attempting to create the big picture We need to synthesize it and "symphonize" it in such a way that we can make sense or meaning of the many facets of life. With all the accumulated knowledge in the world Gardner suggests some methodologies or "mental feats" with which we can use synthesize it. 1. Narratives: a coherent narrative must be employed and created by the synthesizing mind. 2. Taxonomies: ordered in terms of salient characteristics. 3. Complex concepts: a newly stipulated concept ties together a range of phenomena. 4. Rules and aphorisms: wisdom is captured and conveyed by short phrases. 5. Powerful metaphors, images, and themes: they bring concepts to life. 6. Embodiments without words: a work of art is worth a powerful synthesized concept. 7. Theories: concepts can be amalgamated into a theory. 8. Metatheory: an overall framework for knowledge...a theory of theories. These are all ways we "synthesize" or derive meaning from the many vicissitudes of life. He also reveals four components that one must employ when synthesizing. A goal, a starting point, selecting a strategy or approach, then drafts and feedback are all needed to synthesize.
